Winter is almost here, and you know what that means: cold and flu season is upon us. Oh joy! This time of year, it is especially important that you take all precautions to avoid getting sick. Read further to find out what those precautions are, and how you can beat the winter bugs.

A flu shot should be an annual tradition, as it is one of your best defenses against this dangerous virus. A flu shot does not guarantee that you will not get the flu, but it will greatly reduce your chances of catching it. It is recommended that you get a flu shot in early fall, as that is the start of flu season. Talk to your doctor before getting the shot: it is harmless in almost all cases, but people with certain allergies or conditions might be at risk for complications. Many insurance companies cover the shot in full—after all, it saves them money when you don’t get sick!

 

Eat Right

 

To be sure, eating healthy is an important practice year round. During cold and flu season, getting the right vitamins and nutrients can help boost your immune system. Conversely, eating a poor diet of fats and empty calories can cause you to become tired and sluggish, which can actually weaken your immune system. Of course, maintaining a healthy diet has a slew of other benefits as well.

 

Get Plenty Of Rest

 

Speaking of being tired and sluggish, one of the best ways to prevent exhaustion and fatigue is to get plenty of rest. Ideally, you should be getting eight hours of sleep each night. It is also important that you sleep at regular hours, and stay consistent with your sleeping schedule. As with eating healthy foods, this will increase your general health, while also strengthening your immune system to better fight the flu and other viruses.

Your parents were right when they told you to always wash your hands before dinner. Hand washing is still one of the best ways to prevent the spread of communicable diseases like the cold and flu. During cold and flu season, the more you wash your hands, the better off you will be. Invest in some disinfecting soap!  Another great idea is to wear disposable gloves, especially if you come in to contact with the general public often.  They help ensure you are not touching germs.

A good face mask can be found online, and will protect yourself and others from getting sick. Investing in some good face masks is always a good idea during cold and flu season.

 

Do Not Be Afraid To Take Time Off Work

 

Many people continue to show up to work, even after getting quite sick with the cold or flu. This is a bad idea for two reasons. For one, it will make you even sicker, as your body needs time to rest and recuperate. Secondly, it will spread your germs around the office. If you are feeling sick, do not be afraid to call off and rest!
